LazyAss24Seven’s Nintendo 3DS Hardware Review (Finally)

Way back in 2004, I picked up a Nintendo DS. Strange thing is, I originally got it for a GBA game, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Funny thing is, I still have this game in my DS system.

The only reason at the time I got a DS system is that I never had anything beyond an original Gameboy system in my portable gaming arsenal and I wanted to play the new Kingdom Hearts game at the time.

When I first saw what the 3DS could do when it was revealed, I had to make sure that this is what would be upgrading my oldschool NDS. I was all for the concept of having 3D without the use of glasses. You see of these new TVs that required the use of glasses but at the cost of having to buying individual glasses for extra people in the room. Also, these glasses are not cheap either! Some are roughly $150 and have to have batteries charging them. WTF seriously? I can’t help but to think back on the old school 3D glasses with the red and blue filters that provided some eye popping effects with the simplest materials. If there was going to be any device that would be entering my household with 3D capabilities, it would first be the Nintendo 3DS.

To this day, I’ve had my old DS and played it every now and then. Back in the day with Nintendogs being a popular game, to older titles like Rub Rabbits and Feel the Magic, to now with my semi recent time killing addiction that is Pokemon Heartgold and White titles, I haven’t really had the need to upgrade my old DS. I’ve played the previous upgrades for the DS, the Lite and DSi systems but didn’t really see much need to get these systems as well as they just had some features that I didn’t have much use for at the time like the slimmer body designs or the DSi’s camera features. And I did not care to get a DSXL as it was way too bulky for my portable needs. As portable systems go, I think this may be one of my favorite ones yet.
The 3DS has backwards compatible capabilities so you can play older DS games on it but the 3D effects are not usable for the older games. In my use of the 3DS for older games, it doesn’t seem to use the full upper screen as it does with the actual 3DS games. Also, the 3Ds cartridges have a tab on the upper righthand side of the cartridge to prevent it from being played in an older DS system.

It roughly feels like the same weight and visually looks the same size as the DS lite and DSi, until Nintendo decides to put out the “3DS Lite”, maybe. It has the same type of camera on the inside of the system like the DSi and XL but but is now above the upper screen instead of the center of the system and unlike those two, the 3DS has two 3D cameras for taking pictures.

The 3DS now has a new circle shaped analog slider for those who like to have something other than the traditional D-pad for more precise movement for games.

There is also a slider to the right of the 3D screen that you can self-manage to control the intensity of the 3D effect. Some people I know have some difficulties with the full 3D effect and have tended to lower the 3D effect on the system to reduce strain to the eyes. My experience with the 3DS so far has been good with having the 3D effect on at full but then having the actual system a certain distance from my face. When I first tried the 3DS at my local Best Buy, it was in a fixed location and I could not handle it with the freedom I have now. At first, my eyes had to strain at the screen due to the distance of the system from me but now I am having no problem with the 3D effects on the screen.

The locations of the select and start buttons have been moved to the bottom of the touch screen with the addition of a new “home” button in the center. The power button now resides to the right of the screen where the start and select buttons are on the Lite and DSi. The volume control goes back to the slider type function that the old DS has but resides on the left side of the system while the headphone jack is moved to the center of the bottom of the system. Those familiar with the DS Lite’s power switch, the 3DS’ wireless on/off resides on the right side of the system with the slider type switch.

The upper screen and touch screens are larger than previous models except for the XL. Accessories that come with this particular system are an extendable stylus and a charging base for the system. So instead of having to directly plug in the charging cable to the top of the system, you can plug the cable into the charging base and then easily settle in and remove the 3DS with freedom as two charging prongs charge the system through its charging contacts that are on top of the system. There is also a moveable piece on top of the base so if you wanted to play the system and needed to change games while on the base but didn’t want to interrupt the charging process, this makes it possible.

As more games come out for the 3DS, I will review as they come into my possession. As for the other features such as Street Pass, AR Games, Face Raiders, Mii Maker, Activity Log, etc, I will review them within my next blog as I just wanted to stick to the hardware portion of this review. So stay tuned!

Young Idols

I don'y know about you but a big part of being an anime geek is the music and for me that means idols! Many can see idols as celebraties either singers, dancers or voice actors but and idol is really anyone you can look up to and admire. To otaku this is usually someone who is very moe (moe eh) or cute. I am part of an idol group and try to bring a smile to my friands and fans faces with a simple message, "Follow your dreams! No matter how hard life can be, you can truly do whatever you wish." I do this by following my dreams of singin and dancing. I may suck at it but my fans know that I put my heart and soul into it and to them that is all that matters. Ever since I started doing the whole idol thing there was this one little girls videos I have been watching.
Her youtube name is 3u10 and she goes by cuca くか. She is an 8 year old girl who dances and sings to popular idol songs. In a sense she is a huge idol to me. She is so young and so cute.
Here is one of her first videos
This video was uploaded 3 years ago right when my idol group formed and this was also our first upload too!
We aren't as cute as her though!
Here is one of her more recent videos!
You can see how much she has grown up and really evolved into an amazing dancer and singer. I like to call her my daughter because when ever I do have a child if it is a girl I want her to be as talented as Cuca. You can check out more of this adorables girls dances at her youtube page:

Auggie's HeartGold Nuzlocke Chapter 1: Brobrobro-bro Bro-brobro or, How I Stopped Worrying and Loved the Self-Destruct

Even at a height of two feet, a fall still hurts when you land a wooden floor. The young man, who is now flat on his back staring at the ceiling of his room, rubbed the back of his head in a pathetic attempt to ease the throbbing pain. “Damn, that was a hell of a dream” he groaned as he picked himself off the floor. “I don’t know why I told him I was a girl…” He paused as he patted his chest to reassure himself, and breathed a sigh of relief. “Last time I take a nap with the news on” He muttered as the pain dulled.

He glanced at his TV as a distinguished old man continued his lecture. “A world of dreams and adventures awaits!” The audience erupted in applause as the man in a lab coat waved goodbye. “That was renowned Professor Oak concluding his weekly rookie trainer convocation. Stay tuned to POKèMON News Network for an exclusive interview with former Kanto league champion and Vermillion gym leader Gary O-“

“Why do they air this every week?” he asked himself out loud. “He says the same thing over and over again”

“Auggie! I heard a loud thud up there, is everything alright?” yelled an older female voice

“Yeah mom, just getting out of bed.”

“Okay anak. Oh, Lyra stopped by earlier with her Marill, but I told her you were sleeping”

Lyra? What could she want? He thought as he sat down in front of his PC. Let’s see, pmail.com, check inbox…

Eventually Auggie sorted through his spam and found an email from Lyra. He raised an eyebrow at the subject line:

Important! Please Read!

“Knowing Lyra…” he muttered as he clicked the message.

ADVENTURE!!!

EXCITED!!!

I LOVE POKèMON!!!

“Well, that killed a minute of my life” Auggie shutdown his PC and headed out his room. As he headed down the stairs he overheard his mother talking on the phone. He stopped midway and listened in, but he could hear who it was on the other end.

“Oh really? Just for him?”

“No I’m sure he’ll be very happy”

“Don’t worry; I had a feeling this day was going to come. Okay I’ll send him over right away”

“Who was that mom?” Auggie asked as he reached the end of the stairs. “Oh that was just Professor Elm.” “What did he want?” “He wants you to come over; he has some important business with you apparently.” Auggie’s mother gave her son a knowing smile at the last part. “Um…alright.”

As Auggie headed out the door his mother called to him from the kitchen. “Be sure to pick wisely!” Auggie couldn’t figure out what she was talking about. He shrugged off his confusion and closed the door behind him.

It was a sunny day in New Bark Town. The Pidgeys were migrating above and the Spinaraks in the forest buzzed loudly. Auggie took a moment to enjoy the scenery.

Professor Elm huh? Haven’t seen him since I dropped out of his Pokèresearch class…I wonder if he’s still mad about that? Lyra was furious; she wouldn’t talk to me for months. At least she got ove-

Auggie’s thoughts were interrupted when a jet of water made contact with his face. “Good shot Marill! You got that Grimer good” Lyra giggled playfully as her Marill hopped in amusement. “Very cute Lyra” Auggie murmured as he wringed out his bandana. “Sorry Slowbro, you looked so out of it I figured I’d wake you up.” Lyra pulled a handkerchief out of her pocket and handed it to Auggie. “Well thanks for that I guess” For a moment Auggie looked at the piece of cloth uncomfortably, but before Lyra could notice he took it and was wiping his face. “Anyway I’d love to stay and be a target for your Marill, but I got an appointment with Elm right now…”

“Oh really? Tell him dinner will be ready at 6 tonight! And that his fiancée will have a very angry Marill waiting for him if he’s late again…” Hearing that last part brought back feelings Auggie thought he buried long ago. “Yeah yeah, I’ll tell him that.” He resumed walking and tossed the handkerchief into the air and dropped it, leaving Lyra scrambling to catch it. “H-Hey! Watch it Mankey!” “Whatever Pokèmaniac…” He said nonchalantly waving his hand. Auggie just kept on walking, not turning back; he didn’t want Lyra to see the saddened expression on his face.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Auggie stood outside Professor Elm’s lab. He looked to his right and saw his own house not so far away. In fact, he could still make out his mother waving in the living room window. He felt like he’d been walking for hours, yet Elm’s lab was only a half a block away. That’s odd, it feels like after I left Lyra, I was standing in the same spot doing nothing…like I was ‘saving’ my energy or something. He shrugged off his existential train of thought and entered the doors.

No sooner did he take his first step he was greeted by Elm’s assistant Baxter. “Auggie! You made it. Elm’s been fidgeting around nonstop waiting for you to come.”

“It’s only been ten minutes since he called…”

“Yeah, but you know the professor, always has a million thoughts going through his head.”

They shared a laugh as Auggie hung his coat up on the hanger. “Oh by the way, Lyra said to not be late for dinner again.” A deceptive smile hid any negative feelings Auggie had as he said those words. “Man, thanks for the heads up, I really don’t want to be chased around by her Marill again. Anyway Professor Elm’s waiting for you in the back. Don’t forget, choose wisely” Auggie nodded quizzically. That’s the second time I’ve been told that…what’s going on here? He thought as he made his way to the backroom of the lab.

“Auggie my boy! I’m glad you came.” Professor Elm was in the middle of reading some printouts as Auggie entered the room. “Sorry to keep you waiting, Lyra made me take a quick shower courtesy of her Marill.” Elm snickered aloud as he put the printouts away. “She’ll never forgive you for dropping my class...”

“Er…yeah…sorry about that again” Auggie’s shoulders slumped as he looked away in slight shame. “Now now that’s all water under the bridge, I had a feeling PokèResearch wasn’t the path for you anyway.” Before Auggie can question his former mentor’s words Professor Elm motioned to a table nearby. Atop the table were three Pokèballs. “A colleague of mine, Mr. Pokèmon, asked me to pick up a special item. Unfortunately my assistants and I are far too busy with our research that we can’t retrieve it from his possession.” Elm picked up a Pokèball and stared at it with a bemused look. “I was hoping that you would be so kind as to make you way to his house. He lives just north of Cherrygrove City.”

Auggie let out a small chuckle and began to make his way back outside. “Is that all? No problem Professor, I’ll be back in-“ “Wait!” Elm waved his extended arm at Auggie. “You know it’s dangerous to walk through the tall grass without a Pokèmon! So I’m lending you one of our resident ones to protect you along the way.” He placed the Pokèball back onto the table with the rest. “Now then, feel free to pick one of the available Pokèmon.” Oh, that’s what Mom and Baxter were talking about… Auggie walked up to the table and gave each Pokèball a quick glance. How the hell am I supposed to figure out which one to pick? They’re all in their freaking Pokèballs!” He randomly picked one of the spheres and examined it. “So how do I open this thing again?” He turned the button on the Pokèball towards himself. “Well you just press the release button on the front, but be sure to face it towards the grou-“ –CLICK– Before Elm could finish Auggie pressed the release button. “Whoops, finger slipped.” He said casually as he followed a beam of red light shoot into the air. Midway the beam stopped and a small blue creature materialized midair. “Catch it! It could get hurt that Totodile falls from that height!” Elm shouted frantically. Auggie waved his arms around ready to catch the Pokèmon. “I got it I got it I g-“ –CHOMP–

For a few seconds Auggie said nothing. There he was in Elm’s lab, and a Totodile had its jaws clamped around the side of his head. Huh…pain is a bit delayed. Wait…here it comes…3…2…1. “AHHH! Get it off! Get it off!” Elm could only stare in shock as Auggie scrambled around his lab like a headless chicken, or rather a chicken whose head is stuck in a clamp, a sharp, spiky clamp.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Five minutes, a jaws of life, and a few bandages later Auggie sat crossed legged on the floor giving the Totodile a dirty look. The Totodile scratched the back of his head sheepishly. “Sorry about that bro. I guess the shock of being released in mid-air kinda threw me off. First instinct of us Totodiles is to clamp down on the nearest object to save yourself you know?” Auggie dirty look did not soften. “Hey hey Broski, don’t take it personally. My teeth aren’t that sharp yet, you didn’t lose that much blood. See?” The Totodile gave a wide smile that softened Auggie’s anger. “Okay, apology accepted” Auggie sighed and turned to Elm. “I’ll take this little guy, I doubt I’d get in much danger with that set of teeth by my side.”

Elm nodded. “Excellent I’ll just put the other two away for now” He picked up the remaining Pokèballs and placed them in his desk drawer. Out of the corner of his eye Auggie swore he saw a red-haired person staring intently through the window. Before he could focus on it the mysterious figure was gone. Auggie shrugged his shoulders and turned back to the Pokèmon in front of him. “So what’s your name anyway?”

The Totodile pounded his chest and prideful tone spoke. “Broseidon, Bro-tier lord of the sea!” Auggie resisted the urge to facepalm as he stood back up. “Well…Broseidon…let’s get going now shall we?” He started walking towards the door and motioned for Broseidon to follow. “Wait up Bro!” Broseidon waddled quickly to catch up to Auggie. “We’ll be back soon Professor!”

Professor Elm chuckled to himself as he waved the pair off. Little did he know the mysterious red-haired male was staring intensely at Elm's Desk. A small devious grin appeared on his face before he disappeared to make his move.

An introduction to my HeartGold Nuzlocke challenge...

Recently I've discovered a plethora of Pokemon comics that tell the story of gamers undertaking the 'Nuzlocke Challenge'. For those who don't know the rules of a Nuzlock challenge, here are the two main rules:
  1. When a pokemon faints, it is dead and must either be perma'boxed or released
  2. Only the first pokemon in each area may be caught, if killed no second chances
The unspoken rule is that each pokemon must be nicknamed. Obviously the challenge not only adds a level of difficulty to the game, it also adds a layer a depth as trainers begin to bond with pokemon and play more cautiously to avoid their death...

Never give up, never forget, grind like hell

For my own sanity I added extra rules and modified the second:
  1. Same as the original
  2. Only the first available pokemon in each area can be caught, I can choose to pass over unwanted ones
  3. No duplicates (for example, no multiple Pidgeys)
  4. Only TMs, HMs, evolving stones, and held items can be used, healing can only be done at Pokecenter. (For Arceus-sake I'm only breaking this rule for the Elite Four, I can't be that cruel)
  5. No trade pokemon, in-game or otherwise
And that pretty much covers it, I'll be reporting my progress as I go along. I plan on presenting a story exclusive to the blog so look forward to that.

So without further ado, let me introduce the trainer of my story:
Auggie and his Totodile Brosidon!

Crisis in Japan - My thoughts - How you can help

Ever since the earthquakes, tsunamis, and now possible nuclear meltdowns in Japan, my eyes, ears, and heart have never been more focused on the island nation of Japan. My thoughts, prayers, and current and future support go out to those who have lost loved ones, those who are still out there in the middle of everything, those who are trying to survive in this disaster and more.

As many of you may know, I have been a big fan and supporter of Japan ever since I was introduced into its culture through anime in the early 2000's. My dream came true in April of 2006 when I went on a trip to Japan where I was introduced to the country firsthand. The sights and sounds were amazing and were more than what I could expect from a nation such as this. Here, I took in so many memories and made friends that are guaranteed friends for life. Its sad for me to think that if I ever go back again, it may not be the same.

The future of Japan may be uncertain as the aftershocks continue and the threat of possible nuclear meltdown occuring, but one thing has been clear to me, is the overwhelming support that the world has and is giving to Japan. This and the mentality of the Japanese people remaining strong, through all of this disaster, it will rebuild and become stronger through this.

As many people are still missing after the devastating tsunamis, friends and family still search for their lost loved ones. Communiations including phonelines have been overworked and possible inoperable due to the events. Myself, being a fan and admirer of anime, games, and manga of Japan, those in the industry have been checking in as they can through offical media or social medias such as blogs, twitter, and facebook.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-03-11/anime/manga/game-industry-members-check-in-after-quake

Unfortunately, there are still some that have not been able to check in as they may have no possble means to.

Help Japan!

We are all very scared about the earthquake and tsunami in japan that happened yesterday that had after shocks the size of huge earthquakes all night. It is reassuring to hear that our idols and celebrities in Japan are doing ok but there are estimated to be thousands of deaths that did occur. I am doing my best to raise money to donate to the red cross and other organisations to help out the country we love so much. If you would like to contribute to my fund raiser here is the flyer. Together we can make a difference! がんばって日本!

Our worlds been shaken up!

This blog I wish was more informative... maybe one later but I am sure many of our readers are well aware of this unless you are sleeping now then lay peacefully. It is 3:49 and I am finally calm enough to mention it. ( I was in a earth quake and an in a area under tsunami warning so I am freaking out.) But yes so the news it that a 8.9M earthquake went off in the ocean around 80 miles from Japan around 1 am Pacific time. It was so big that Tokyo felt it for several minutes and are having aftershocks up to 6.0M. There was also a tsunami that has taken over most of Sedai.
Right now I am watching the news hearing about Hawaii preparing for the tsunami hit and i am nervously await news on when I should evacuate it California.
I will write a way better post when my head is screwed on! But I want to post the news up while it was fresh.

On Pokemon, some observations after 3 days traversing Unova

So like every other nerd on the planet I have been playing the latest pokemon game, White specifically. I just can't get enough of those racist undertones. But I digress, I've yet to beat the game so unless something drastic happens I doubt my opinions will change.

First off let's talk design. Going into this I had very low expectations about the pokemon I would be encountering. I had seen quite a few of them on various sites and I wasn't impressed. But, as I traversed the region of Unova(merica) I began to discover quite a few pokemon that I thought were, amazing. So yeah, its about an even split between the good looking ones and the crimes against nature. Type-wise, which past this I don't care about details, there are a few interesting combinations. Bug-electric, dark-dragon, ghost-fire, and so on. Then there's Deerling: Normal-Grass.

Normal-Grass.

Just why? I mean normal I can understand, and grass because it changes with the in game seasons, whatever. Maybe its just me and my categorical psychosis, or something but I think that's just wrong.

On the subject of legendaries, people complain constantly about the influx of legendaries in this version. Well think about it from a story perspective. Its a new continent with its own mythos and what not. Of course there's going to be a bunch of legendaries to fill to gaps. I mean at least you don't have pokemon that lord over space and time or Poke-god. They're just pokemon that are really powerful that achieved a sort of mythological standing to them, and not gods to be commanded by teenagers.

Moving on, the music is great. I love the music in this game. Past games the music never really stuck out to me. This one is different particularly the legend battle and rival battles, the music is just really enjoyable for a pokemon game.

The, Environments are pretty cool. The 3-D effects can get a bit annoying to navigate but nothing really game breaking, plus it give the game an added sort of depth/excitement. The designs of the towns are unique and charming, and there is a nice change in atmosphere going from place to place. My biggest complaint is that some of the routes and areas are a bit small and like all pokemon games the encounter rates can get maddening. Aside from that the locales are all neat and I don't find myself glazing over parts just to get to the plot.

The Plot, having not played every generation I can't really judge if its improved but, your rivals are much more fleshed out than just a douche-bag that has a lust for power, like blue/silver, and they actually have some compelling development other than just learning that its wrong to view pokemon as tools. The Team, Team Plasma, actually has a reasonable goal: Liberating pokemon so that pokemon and humans are equal. Granted they go about it in the most radical criminal way possible. Their Leader N is actually a pretty like-able guy not just some raving lunatic, its a shame every other member of the Team is an unspeakable frothing dip shits. Granted I haven't finished the game so I could be dead wrong about all of this.

Online. I don't normally use online features mainly because I A: usually have bad connections B: Always saw them as kinda dumb and C: Am forever alone. Just kidding about that last one. This game just by the sheer volume of online connectivity, with friend codes, the survey side quests, being able to see other people activities in real time, and so much more even to a guy like me I have to say it's amazing.

All in all this game, is everything you're looking for in a pokemon game. The same gameplay you love but all wrapped up in a shiny new exterior. Its got it's faults sure and it may be using much of the basic pokemon structure but they're so outweighed by the new and exciting things that it doesn't matter. If you were on the fence about buying this game: Buy it. If you want to buy this game but haven't: Buy it faster, its 35 bucks that's not a lot and you can go with out a few meals. If you are dead set against it and everything it stands for: give it a shot. Borrow it for a few days from a friend. It may just change your mind.

Zombies! They do exist!

They are real! OK so they aren't the zombies your used to in the movies or comics you see but there is proof of real zombies.
The deffinition od zombie is:

zom·bie

[zom-bee]
–noun
1. (in voodoo)
a. the body of a dead person given the semblance of life, but mute and will-less, by a supernatural force, usuallyfor some evil purpose.
b. the supernatural force itself.
2. Informal .
a.
a person whose behavior or responses are wooden, listless, or seemingly rote; automaton.
b.
an eccentric or peculiar person.
3.
a snake god worshiped in West Indian and Brazilian religiouspractices of African origin.

So now that we know the definition of a zombie let's look at the reality. According to a link on Yahoo news there has been some kind of discovery of zombie ant fungi! So they are zombie ants! This fungi will control ants like zombies but then slowly kill them off. So these zombies aren't dead like our fantasy of zombies.
If you want the scientific facts from the sorce I got it from here is the link!
I just dumbed it down way too much but in all WE ARE NOT SAFE!
So how will you prepare for the apocalypse?

geek and gamer girls music video.

Being a geek/gamer girl myself seeing music videos on it just makes my day. I saw this video on my Facebook. It really has been making it's rounds on there.. So I watched it and i think it is hilarious. The voices of the girls are pretty annoying but if you put that aside it is quite enjoyable.

I feel so dumb but now I see!

Ok so while recording the podcast today I mentioned Sorcerer Hunter and messed up with the story. I am a horrible nerd omg! I mixed SH with maze. But while we are on the subject it took me an hour but I found this!
The ending to Maze! This was the first anime I owned in Japanese. It was of course on VHS oh the days.
This brought back soo many memories. I want to go back and re-watch all these old animes.
